Google is building a new future

Google has allowed use of its forthcoming updated search engine – which is being nicknamed ‘Caffeine’ by the industry.

It is designed to add speed, accuracy and more comprehensive search results for the user.

It comes just months after Microsoft announced Bing – and expects are suggesting that it could kick Bing to the curb.

Google is thought to be doubling the speed of search results, and introducing real-time results, which will allow it to be ready for the new competition of the Friend Feed and Facebook alliance which is focused on real-time search.

Google still accounts for around 87% of  the UK search market, and so its captive audience will welcome this move and it will be hard for Bing and others to tempt them away.

The new Google will look the same too, all that has changed is the algorithms (the clever stuff behind the scenes).

We’ll be following the changes and will post more details as they come, but for now, we will be trying out the new search engine – you can too :

Facebook acquire Friend Feed

The industry expected Google or possibly Twitter to buy friendfeed, which has been praised for its “real-time” search engine.

The benifit of this type of search informs users on what is happening right now.

It is thought that Facebook believes that the real money is in real-time search – and this approach could give Google a chase for numbers of users in the future.

The move means that Facebook is not only aiming at taking on Google, but also Twitter who has approx 45 million users.

It is thought that Friend Feed has inspired much of Facebooks features, such as importing data from other social sites.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has added the following comments :
“Since I first tried FriendFeed, I’ve admired their team for creating such a simple and elegant service for people to share information.
“As this shows, our culture continues to make Facebook a place where the best engineers come to build things quickly that lots of people will use.”
As part of the agreement, all FriendFeed employees will join Facebook and the company’s four founders will be given senior roles on the social networking site’s engineering and product teams.
FriendFeed will continue as it is for the moment independently.
“Eventually, one way or another, it’s hard to see FriendFeed as it stands now, continuing on,” said MG Siegler of Silicon Valley news site Tech Crunch.
“Facebook will begin to take up too much of the FriendFeeders’ time, and it will languish. It’s sad, but that’s the web. Not every service can flourish. There simply aren’t enough users with enough time to use all of them.”

Studio 8 believe that for now, your company should make use of all social platforms, as no one knows who will come out on top, but with the aqusition of Friend Feed – Facebook is looking like one of the favourites.

What does Friend Feed do?

 - Friendfeed enables users bring together their social media accounts such as Facebook and Flickr

- Updates are echoed on FriendFeed.

- With its chat system,  FriendFeed users instantly comment or start a conversation about an update.

- The feeds  can be embedded in webpages or fed  to services such as Twitter.

- FriendFeed works with almost 60 sites including Delicious, Reddit, LinkedIn and NetVibes.

New Domain names for brands?

August 9, 2009

Icann, the internet’s regulator has voted to relax the strict rules on  “top-level” domain names, such as .com or .uk.
The decision means that companies could possibly  turn their  brands into web addresses, and individuals could use their names.

Domain names will be based on any string of letters, in any script.

Individuals will be able to register a domain based on their own name, for example, as long as they can show a “business plan and technical capacity”.
Companies will be able to secure domain names based on their intellectual property.

The first potential Top Level Domain will likely be the geo-TLDs such as .cym for Wales, .sco for Scotland, .ldn for London, .nyc for New York.

“We expect that the fee will be in the low six figure dollar amounts,” said Dr Twomey.

The process of introducing the new system will start in 2009, with the first websites possibly coming online in the final quarter of the year.

Whilst we do not expect the majority of our clients to rush to want to register their brand at this fee, it is definatley woth watching to see how things develop.
