Twitter launches the follow button for websites

June 9, 2011

Twitter has launched a new “follow button” which will allow users to follow accounts directly from any website.

By clicking on the “follow button”, Twitter users can subscribe to updates directly from the website’s Twitter account.  You can also see the profile and newest Tweets of the account you want to follow by clicking the username next to the button. Twitter hopes this will make it easier for users to find and follow interesting accounts on Twitter. In a blog post announcing the button, Twitter’s Brian Ellin wrote: “More than 50 sites have added the “follow button” today, making it easy for you to discover the Twitter accounts of your favourite reporters, athletes, celebrities, and other personalities. Using the “follow button” is as simple as a single click. You can also see the profile and newest Tweets of the account you want to follow by clicking the username next to the Button.”

+1 on Google – Google’s answer to the Facebook “Like” Button

March 31, 2011

Google is starting to roll out another social offering called +1 that is tied to the search results that shows up to it’s users.

Google stated on their blog post “Our goal at Google is to get you the most relevant results as quickly as possible. But relevance is about relationships as well as words on webpages. That’s why we recently started to include more information from people you know—stuff they’ve shared on Twitter, Flickr and other sites—in Google search results.

Today we’re taking that a step further, enabling you to share recommendations with the world right in Google’s search results. It’s called +1—the digital shorthand for “this is pretty cool.” To recommend something, all you have to do is click +1 on a webpage or ad you find useful. These +1’s will then start appearing in Google’s search results.”

Nearly a year after Facebook’s “Like” button was launched across the web, Google has developed a competitive alternative.

When you enable +1, it will be made up of:

Contacts in your Gmail & Google Talk chat list
Contacts in your “My Contacts” group in Google Contacts
Contacts you follow in Google Reader or Google Buzz

What’s missing are people that you are connected to via non-Google services, such as Twitter and Flickr. That’s something that will come in the future, Google says.

Third-party Twitter applications under threat

March 15, 2011

The “official” software for Twitter may soon be the only way to access it has been reported.

Twitter has worried many software developers by suggesting they stop making “clients” that let users write, read and respond to Tweets.

The move has been seen by many as a way in which Twitter can take control of the service to boost their own ad revenues and improve commercialisation. A message was posted by Ryan Sarver, of Twitter’s platform team. He contends that over 90 percent of Twitter’s audience is now using a client built by the company rather than a third-party offering such as TweetDeck or Seesmic. He also claims that the diversity of the application ecosystem and the differences in presentation between individual client applications is “confusing” for end users.

Developers responded quickly, with one calling the announcement “appalling”.

Twitter have  put up a blog post speaking about their platform approach and long-term strategy. In that same post, however, the company has made some decisions that are sure to irk a couple of third-party developers and start-ups.

Twitter have also stated that their growth in the last year from 48 million to 140 million Tweets per day had forced it to think about how users get at the service.

Before now, many people have spurned the official Twitter application or client in favour of alternatives such as TweetDeck, Seesmic, Echofon, HootSuite and others.

In the UK, we can only imagine the devastation which occurred in Japan, and the concerning high number of deaths and more people missing. One of the scariest factors many don’t consider when an event like this occurs is how the avenues of communication shut down.

Telephone lines are reported to be down for most of Japan, and reaching a loved one is an extremely difficult task to undertake. As reports surface, messages from Facebook and Twitter provide the latest news. Doing a bit of research shows how the human spirit can be found within the social media platforms.

During this distressing time, Social Media has proven to be one of the most reliable ways to find information. Why? This tweet from the US State Department says it all: “Telephone lines disrupted; try contacting loved ones.. Via social media.”
